DOJ Commends Weather Service

                                                        May 6, 2002

Administrator Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Jr.
Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy (Retired)
Under Secretary of Commerce for
Oceans and Atmosphere
Washington, D.C. 20230

Dear Administrator Lautenbacher:

Congratulations on your appointment as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

I received a copy of your letter dated February 28, 2002, to Attorney General John Ashcroft explaining NOAA'S information services and your offer to share the information with the Department of Justice. As a law enforcement officer for the past 26 years and Emergency Management Coordinator on the Texas Gulf Coast, I truly admire the dedication and commitment of the fine men and women of the National Weather Service. Although difficult to quantify, NWS employees save many lives by providing timely, accurate, and reliable forecasts during severe weather.

The United States Marshals Service is responsible for specialized law enforcement operations throughout the United States and its territories as part of our defined mission. Weather forecasts can be an important tool to our organization. Our Emergency Operations Center will be contacting your office to subscribe to your service.

I applaud your efforts to increase interagency cooperation. Thank you for your assistance and we look forward to working with the National Weather Service.

Sincerely,

/s/

Benigno G. Reyna
Director
