WMO Super Heading Reference

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Headings have the
format of T1T2A1A2ii CCCC . WMO super headings are used to aggregate products for the same parameter (NDFD element) and sector. These aggregate products contain individual products for all forecast periods. For these aggregate products the WMO super headings are consistent with those for individual NDFD products except in the super headings, the A2 is always Z. The CCCC for all SPC product WMO headings is KWNS (indicating they are produced by SPC) The T1 = L, M, V and E for all GRIB2 and Y, Z, H and O for GRIB1 (GRIB1 will become obsolete in the near future) product WMO headings. The T2 indicates the elements: A = UNASSIGNED B = UNASSIGNED C = UNASSIGNED D = Used for non-NDFD SPC grids E = Probability of Tornadoes F = Probability of Hail G = Probability of Damaging Thunderstorm Winds H = Probability of Extreme Tornadoes I = Probability of Extreme Hail J = Probability of Extreme Thunderstorm Winds K = Total Probability of Severe Thunderstorms L = Total Probability of Extreme Severe Thunderstorms M = Convective Hazard Outlook N = Fire Weather Critical Area O = Fire Weather Critical Area Dry Thunderstorm P = Fire Weather Extremley Critical Area Q = Enhanced Thunderstorm Outlook Period 1 Product R = Enhanced Thunderstorm Outlook Period 2 Product S = UNASSIGNED T = UNASSIGNED U = UNASSIGNED V = UNASSIGNED W = UNASSIGNED X = UNASSIGNED Y = UNASSIGNED Z = UNASSIGNED (A1) indicates Area Designator [NOTE: These are the same for all NDFD products to date] A = PUERTO RICO [not used by SPC at this time] B = NORTHEAST C = MID-ATLANTIC D = SOUTHEAST E = EAST GREAT LAKES F = CENTRAL GREAT LAKES G = UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY H = CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI VALLEY I = SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI VALLEY J = NORTHERN PLAINS K = CENTRAL PLAINS L = SOUTHERN PLAINS M = NORTHERN ROCKIES N = CENTRAL ROCKIES O = SOUTHERN ROCKIES P = PACIFIC NORTHWEST Q = PACIFIC SOUTHWEST R = ALASKA [not used by SPC at this time] S = HAWAII [not used by SPC at this time] T = GUAM [not used by SPC at this time] U = CONUS V = NORTHERN HEMISPHER (GRID 227) [not used by SPC at this time] W = NORTHERN HEMISPHER (GRID 231) [not used by SPC at this time] X = UNASSIGNED Y = UNASSIGNED Z = UNASSIGNED Refer to the following links for information about the NDFD domains and the 16 pre-defined NDFD CONUS subsectors: " .gif images (Need to scroll down a bit to get the sector info) " Flash application (rollover display) (A2 and ii) indicates Reference Time Designator for products in NDFD: A = Day 0 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] B = Day 1 ii = hour (0-23) C = Day 2 ii = hour (0-23) D = Day 3 ii = hour (0-23) E = Day 4 ii = hour (0-23) F = Day 5 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] G = Day 6 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] H = Day 7 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] I = Day 8 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] J = Day 9 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] K = Day 10 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] L = Day 11 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] M = Day 12 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] N = Day 13 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] O = Day 14 ii = hour (0-23) [not used by SPC at this time] P = UNASSIGNED Q = UNASSIGNED R = UNASSIGNED S = UNASSIGNED T = UNASSIGNED U = UNASSIGNED V = UNASSIGNED W = Weeks [not used by SPC at this time] X = Months [not used by SPC at this time] Y = Year [not used by SPC at this time] Z = Super Header Designation ii indicates end hour of valid period or time range of grids for super headers: 95 = UNASSIGNED 96 = UNASSIGNED 97 = Days 4-7 at 5.0 km resolution 98 = Days 1-3 at 5.0 km resolution 99 = UNASSIGNED Explicit List of WMO Super Headings for 9 SPC elements in NDFD: Probability of Tornadoes Days 1 -
