This data set is a polygon shapefile of the provinces and territories of Canada.
Purpose:
To supply the National Weather Service (NWS) with high quality, Canadian data set for use in the AWIPSsystem in certain Weather Forecasting Offices (WFO).

Logical_Consistency_Report:
These data are believed to be logically consistent. Testing was performed by finding the smallest polygons and determining them to be "slivers" or genuine polygons and by overlaying a large polygon and combining, to find "holes' in the data. Since this data set is a polygon shapefile line geometry is presumed to be topologically clean.

Process_Description:
Arcs for each province were downloaded along with Nunavut. The Drains data set was also downloaded. Each province/territory was imported into ArcView and a shapefile created. Arcs from province/territory boundaries were combined with shore, island or lake boundaries to create complete province/territory outlines. Internal arcs were deleted. Arcs were converted to polygons and merged into a single Canada shapefile. The Canadian border with the United States was edgematched with the 1:2,000,000 United States shapefile used by NWS (us_state). All polygons for a particular province/territory were "unioned" and attributes were added.
