Project: Saudi Project Funding: Saudi Arabia Amount: $1.1M
Description: Technical meteorological and environmental protection partnership often spawns rewards with significant social, economical benefits, (i.e., more accurate weather forecasts, cleaner water, better hazardous waste management, etc). Other benefits: increased data flow from Middle East (Saudi and 22 other Arab speaking nations), which correlates to more accurate global numerical weather prediction models; improved relations (Foreign Policy); more accurate and timely forecasts in Saudi Arabia to protect the estimated 18 million people.

Implemented Acquisition Plan.

Project: Third Border Initiative Funding: DOS/USAID Amount: $452,000
Description: (1) Enhance, renovate, and rehabilitate the hydrometeorological monitoring network in the CARICOM region, including upper-air and surface observation systems as well as sea-level monitoring networks; (2) Deploy the Emergency Manager's Weather Information Network (EMWIN) as a satellite-based natural-hazard information network.

Project: Asia Flood Network Funding: USAID Amount: $1000k
Description: NWS is cooperating with the US Geological and other US hydrometeorological organizations to transfer flood-related technologies to Asia, and train counterpart organizations in their use. More Info
Status: Concurrent training and capacity building activities via regional organizations in Southeast Asia and South Asia.

Reduced loss of life and property via improved flood forecasting and warning information to flood-at-risk communities in Asia.

Project: Czech Republic Funding: NWS Amount: $20k
Description: Improve flood forecast capabilities
Status: In 2006, four government representatives from Czech Republic visited the NWS toward a goal of developing a flash flood monitoring and warning program within the Czech Republic.  A NWS official visited Prague to present lectures on short-range rainfall prediction and an evolving system for creating flash flood guidance from digital elevation model and land-surface data.

Project: Romania DESWAT Funding: Romania Amount: $750k
Description: Destructive Water Abatement and Control of Water Disasters (DESWAT)

Implementation of NWS’s River Forecast System (RFS) technology and to assist Romania’s Ministry of Water and Environmental Protection of Romania (MoWEP) undertake flood-forecasting, in conjunction with Lockheed Martin. The project has three components:

  1. Collect information to allow NWS to become more familiar with Romania’s existing flood-forecasting system and identify characteristics of the meteorological modernization that can facilitate flood forecasting. (complete)
  2. Implement NWS River Forecast System technology concurrently at two levels, regional and nationally.
  3. Propose a national implementation of RFS technology nationwide.

Forecasting operation managed by Apele Romane (AR), the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA).

Description: Assist with improving forecasting for tropical cyclones, severe weather, extreme temperatures, floods and flash floods and with improving forecast communications
Status: Training completed at NOAA for 19 Indian scientists and engineers in all areas of the program; workshop on HWRF cyclone model scheduled for January 2007 in New Delhi; training will continue through August 2007
