The recent successful operational test and evaluation of the AWIPS workstation and software at a number of Weather Forecast Offices cleared the way for the approval. The NWS began installing AWIPS at 21 facilities this fall. The installation of the next 19 systems will begin in about six months. A Commerce Department decision on installing the remaining systems is scheduled for early 1998. In total, the NWS expects to install 152 AWIPS systems nationwide.
The 19 AWIPS systems will be installed as follows:
Fourteen systems at NWS weather forecast offices: Boise, ID; Cincinnati, OH; Indianapolis, IN; Jackson, KY; Louisville, KY; Paducah, KY; Houston/Galveston, TX; Atlanta, GA; Melbourne, FL; Miami, FL; Amarillo, TX; Great Falls, MT; Missoula, MT; Seattle, WA.
Three systems at River Forecast Centers (RFC's): Ohio RFC, Cincinnati, OH; Southeast RFC, Atlanta, GA; Arkansas Red Basin RFC, Tulsa, OK.
One system will also be installed at the NWS Southern Region Headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. And the final system will be installed at the Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology Education and Training site in Boulder Colorado.
