
Upper Air Observations at Green Bay (GRB), Wisconsin, will not be available starting July 6th, 1999, and continuing for approximately 3 weeks. The upper air building will be encased during this time in order that workers can safely remove lead paint from interior and exterior surfaces. [Late-breaking correction, 07/16/99: A work-around has been devised, and there should be no interruptions in data.]
A new AWOS observation is available on the Family of Services at: SAW- Gwinn, Michigan.
Sporadic METAR observations are now available from the following platform in the Gulf of Mexico: SRN- South Marsh Island 268: Latitude 29o 07" North, Longitude 91o 52" West.
Effective July 2, 1999, Barbers Point, Hawaii, Naval Air Station became a civilian airfield. Owned by the state of Hawaii, the facility will be known as Kalaeloa Airport. The NWS has assumed TAF responsibilities from the Navy. The three letter identifier has changed from NAS to JRF. The four letter ICAO identifier changes from PHNA to PHJR.
On 5/23/99 Robert Mueller Airport (KAUS) in Austin, Texas, closed. All observations have been transferred to the new Austin/Bergstrom International Airport. The new airport loses its old id (KBSM) and becomes KAUS. The ASOS at the former Robert Mueller Airport has been kept for climatological purposes and now has the id KATT. It will be referred to as the Austin/City ASOS.
The MTC met in Evansville, Indiana, on June 15-16, 1999, to consider proposed NWS office closures. The MTC concluded there was a degradation of service to the Evansville area and recommended the Secretary of Commerce not certify the Evansville office closure. The MTCrequested the NWS present a proposed action plan by August 15, 1999 for mitigating the following areas of degradation: radar coverage, spotter coordinaton, NOAA weather radio content/coverage, and alternative communications.
The MTC endorsed the following office closures: Beckley, WV; Boston, MA (Residual office); Concord, NH; Hartford, CT; Kahului, HI; Providence, RI; Portland, ME (Residual office); and Worcester, MA. The MTC will make a recommendation on the prposed Huntsville, AL Office closure at its September 28-29 meeting.
