Daily Snowfall: NCEP's Climate Prediction Center now posts daily maps of U.S. snowdepth maps that incorporate cooperative weather observations for improved resolution at:

Satellite Picture of the Day: Interpretation of daily weather features from GOES satellite imagery are archived at: http://www.cira.colostate.edu/ramm/picoday/discussion.html. Recent discussions cover methods for distinguishing mid-level clouds, fog stratus and snow cover as well as tropical low level thunderstorm boundaries. The image of the day and discussion on Monday December 8th covered westerly wind bursts and twin tropical cyclones.

SPC Winter Weather Discussions: The Storm Prediction Center has started to issue more technical and detailed mesoscale discussions on winter weather events as a result of user demands. These discussions are issued as needed and can be accessed at:

NCEP Updates on the ETA/NGM Models


The new 32 km ETA model is now targeted for implementation by mid-January. While the NGM decommissioning is now targeted fro the fall of 1999, the issue of future AVN and ETA MOS-type guidance is still unresolved. NCEP will seek user input on this plan over the next year.

GOES News


Engineers have tentatively planned to switch the GOES-8 Sounder filter wheel motor back to single-winding operation on December 15th, 1997. The GOES 10 continues to operate "nominally" in the storage mode. This storage mode will continue into 1998.
