D. James Baker, NOAA Administrator, has appointed Xavier William "Bill" Proenza the new director for the Southern Region of the National Weather Service. Bill had served as acting director for the last year. As NWS Southern Region Director, Proenza will manage all operational and scientific meteorologic and hydrologic programs for the southern portions of the country. A meteorology graduate of Florida State University, Proenza has been with the National Weather Service for 30 years in a diverse array of field forecasting and management positions.
