What
is GUARDIAN?
Guardian will be a communicator between AWIPS software and AWIPS forecaster
that will be a persistent process on each workstation. It can
be customized and tailored so that the forecaster gets notified how
they want (pop-up, text, audio, blink, etc), based on the source of
the message, the priority of the message, and the category of the
message. It will also adopt the Monitor buttons that currently
exist under the WarnGen button in the D2D. It is expected such
flexibility will reduce the number of unwanted pop-ups and allow each
WFO to do its own thing regarding notifications to forecasters.
The sole developer and Task Lead for Guardian is Tom
Filiaggi.
Guardian Operational Highlights Once Guardian becomes operational in AWIPS OB7.2, there will be a few changes that will hopefully be an immediate benefit/relief to AWIPS users:
* Guardian will exist on only 1 of the 3 LX screens, thus any red-banners (pop-ups) that get produced will only be displayed on the one screen. (You can choose which screen.)
* With user account changes associated to Guardian, pop-ups should not take cursor focus any more when they appear.
* Guardian will auto-start on the LX and XT machines when your desktop starts. You won't have to remember to start it up or shut it down.
* Guardian will allow you to control pop-up behavior. The Guardian that runs on the XT machines can have all pop-ups turned off to eliminate any potential duplications with the LX machines.
Guardian
Operational in AWIPS OB7
Guardian will be delivered to the field for operational use in AWIPS
OB7.2. We have had great forecaster testing of Guardian for both "Pre-Integration Testing" (PIT) and "Software Integration
Testing" SwIT) software development stages, resulting in some
great discussions
and fine tuning of the graphical user interface. A draft of the
OB7.2 Guardian User's Guide
is available, so take a look ,if you are interested.
