General Information

Effective September 6, 2006 at 1400 UTC – Six Forecasts for Alaska to be Added as  Experimental Elements to the National Digital Forecast Database

On September 6. 2006 at 1400 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), six elements for Alaska will be added to the National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) in experimental status. The six elements are:

Maximum Temperature    Wind Direction
Minimum Temperature     Wind Speed

12-Hour Probability of Precipitation (PoP12)

Significant Wave Height

REMINDER: Two other NDFD changes are also being implemented September 6, 2006 at 1400 UTC

The spatial resolution for the NDFD elements for Alaska is 6 kilometers.  NOTE:  The spatial resolution of all NDFD elements for all other domains (CONUS; Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands; Hawaii; and Guam) is 5 kilometers.

As with all elements in NDFD, the experimental elements for Alaska will be accessible in several ways:

Partners and customers who want to access these elements for Alaska via their procedures and scripts.  Detailed information for ftp users is included below. Customers who use the NDFD graphical forecasts and the NDFD XML via web service can use the same methods they currently use to acquire these new NDFD elements for Alaska.  The graphics for these elements for Alaska will be labeled “experimental”.

Comments and feedback on these experimental elements for Alaska will be accepted through April 6, 2007

REMINDER:  Two other changes to NDFD are also being implemented on September 6 at 1400 UTC:

  1. All NDFD element files will be split into smaller files.  For information on that change, see:
  2. Add wind gust as an experimental element for the CONUS; the 16 pre-defined CONUS subsectors; Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands; Hawaii; and Guam.  For information on that change, see:

Instructions for anonymous ftp users:

At 1400 UTC on September 6, 2006, the first set of forecasts for Alaska will be available as experimental elements in NDFD.  The new elements are:

Maximum Temperature    Wind Direction
Minimum Temperature     Wind Speed

12-Hour Probability of Precipitation (PoP12)

Significant Wave Height

Partners and customers who want to access these experimental NDFD elements via anonymous ftp may need to update their procedures and scripts.  The file names and URLs to access these six experimental elements for Alaska via ftp are shown below.

To access the experimental elements for Alaska from NDFD via anonymous ftp, starting at 1400 UTC on September 6, 2006:
