General Information

Effective September 6, 2006 at 1400 UTC – Wind Gust to be Added as an Experimental Element to the National Digital Forecast Database for the CONUS, Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands, Hawaii and Guam

On September 6, 2006 at 1400 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), or midnight September 7th local Guam time, Wind Gust will be added to the National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) as an experimental element for the conterminous U.S. (CONUS); the 16 pre-defined CONUS subsectors; Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands; Hawaii; and Guam.

Wind gust forecasts are issued for three hour periods out to 72 hours.

REMINDER: Two other NDFD changes are also being implemented September 6, 2006 at 1400 UTC

As with all elements in NDFD, the experimental wind gust element will be accessible in several ways:

Partners and customers who want to access this element for one or more domain(s) via anonymous ftp may need to update their procedures and scripts.  Detailed information for ftp users is included below. Customers who use the NDFD graphical forecasts and the NDFD XML via web service can use the same methods they currently use to acquire this new element for the domain(s) of interest.  The wind gust graphics will be labeled “experimental”.

Comments and feedback on the experimental wind gust element will be accepted through
March 6, 2007.

REMINDER:  Two other changes to NDFD are also being implemented on September 6 at 1400 UTC:
  1. All NDFD element files will be split into smaller files.  For information on that change, see:
  2. Add six experimental NDFD elements for Alaska. For information on that change, see:

Instructions for anonymous ftp users:

At 1400 UTC on September 6, 2006 (midnight on September 7th local time in

Guam), Wind Gust elements will be:

  • Added to the anonymous ftp subdirectories (shown below) containing experimental NDFD elements for the CONUS; the 16 pre-defined CONUS subsectors; Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands; Hawaii; and Guam

Partners and customers who want to access this NDFD element for one or more of these domain(s) via anonymous ftp may need to update their procedures and scripts.

The file name for wind gust within the subdirectories is “ds.wgust.bin”.

The URLs to access the Wind Gust element via anonymous ftp are shown below.  NOTE:  Since wind gusts are only issued through 72 hours, wind gust forecasts will not be included in the Days 4-7 subdirectory for any of the NDFD domains.
