Key Steps to Take and Important "Must-Do" Tasks
Nlets approved member users should take the following steps to gain access to the NWWS via Nlets. Throughout this process,
please remember to contact Gregory Zwicker at NWS or Dan Lam at CSC to answer any questions that may arise (see contact information below).
Step 1 – Establish IP connectivity to the NWWS/Nlets web server
Contact Nlets to configure your Nlets connection to access the Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) Nlets/NWWS web server, located in Chantilly, Va.
(IP address 131.131.254.10). This web server is dedicated to support the Nlets/NWWS project,
and can only be accessed via the Nlets network. It keeps track of the products you want to receive, and where you want them delivered (via the designated ORI).
The products you select will be sent to the designated ORI as Nlets HR messages, as they are issued by the NWS or other agencies.
Step 2 – Register for an account on the Nlets/NWWS web server
Once you have access to the CSC web server at 131.131.254.10, please register for an account. You will select a login name and password.
You will also provide the designated ORI, and user contact information. After initial setup, your ORI, password, or contact information can be changed at any time.
Step 3 – Selection of NWWS data from the NWWS/Nlets web server
The CSC web server allows you to control and select the NWWS products you wish to receive, via a user-friendly web interface.
Products are selected using any combination of the sub-fields from the WMO header (TTAAII, and CCCC), or AWIPS ID (NNN, and XXX),
including the Universal Geographic Codes (UGC). All products received from NWWS are in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) format.
First you must create a "selection",
which specifies the NWWS products you want to receive, according to their WMO Header or AWIPS ID. You assign a name to the selection,
and specify its start and end dates. Use any name that is meaningful to you. In most cases, the end date will be "never",
which implies the selection will be in place indefinitely. You can activate or deactivate your selections at any time by clicking the enable/disable button.
Using the WMO Header entry format, you can select your products using any combination of TTAAII, CCCC, UGC and/or State code.
Using the AWIPS ID entry format, you can select your products using any combination of NNN, XXX, CCCC, UGC and/or State Code.
Contact your local Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) for help with identification of product headers and selection of weather products.
A nationwide listing of WCM is available at: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/wcm-soo.pdf.
CSC can also be contacted to assist with product selections.
Example product selections:
(1) Using the AWIPS ID entry format, you can select all Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued from WFO Sterling, VA (KLWX),
by inputting SVR in the NNN field, and KLWX in the CCCC field.
(2) Using the AWIPS ID entry format, you can select all Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued from WFO Sterling, VA (KLWX),
