Drought: National Resources

NOAA's Drought Information Center

Provides information on current conditions (e.g., Palmer Drought Severity Index, Crop Moisture Index), background information and links to other sources of drought information.

Drought Monitor

Site is a collaborative effort among Federal and non-Federal agencies to provide a centralized source of drought information

National Drought Mitigation Center

Stated purpose is to help people and institutions develop and implement measures to reduce societal vulnerability to drought. It is based at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and stresses preparation and risk management rather than crisis management.

Climate Prediction Center's Drought Monitoring Page

Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) and Crop Moisture Index (CMI)  provided in maps and tabular, numerical tables for the lower 48-States.

Climate Division Drought Data

Components of Palmer Drought Severity Index available graphically, by climate division. and time period.

Standardized Precipitation Index

Formulated  to assign a single numeric value to the precipitation which can be compared across regions with markedly different climates.

Climate Prediction Center's Soil Moisture Page

A series of maps showing most recent day, monthly and 12 months calculated soil moisture, anomalies and percentiles; 25-year average soil moisture & soil wetness that are used in the soil moisture outlook.

Real-Time Water Information from the U.S. Geological Survey

Access to U.S. Geological Survey's extensive collection of surface water data, including a national map depicting  streamflow conditions as a percentile, which is computed from the period of record for the current day of the year.

North American Drought Variability

Focus is on drought variability for the last ca. 100 years based on instrumental data, and on the last several centuries and millennia based on paleoclimatic proxy data.

National Drought Policy Commission
