| LA/MS | Hurricane Katrina -see note below |
Hurricane Katrina caused widespread devastation and loss of live across Louisiana and Mississippi from late August into early September. The number of deaths due to flooding as opposed to other causes is highly uncertain and may never be accurately determined. There is an estimated 1000 direct hurricane deaths in Louisiana and 200 in Mississippi. What proportion of these are flooding related will take a long time to identify, and have not been as of now.
