13. Statistical Suggestion of Break Points

The user can specify whether or not the IDMA tool will suggest potential breakpoints (determine statistically suggested break points). This is done by selecting Yes or No on the option to determine statistically suggested breakpoints. This can be done at any time. If a suggested break point matches a currently defined break point, then the suggested break point is ignored.

Note: For MAT data, the currently displayed minimum or maximum data is used to determine where the break points are located but are applied to both minimum and maximum temperature plots.

The user can specify the tolerance used in the regression estimation. The default value of this tolerance is 2.0 inches for accumulated monthly precipitation data.  Whenever the tolerance value is changed, the statistics package must be re-run by pressing the "Recompute Break Points" button.

As noted earlier, the maximum number of breakpoints for a station is 10. It is possible for the automated break point detection process to detect break points in addition to the ones already defined by the user, that total more than 10. In this case, only the 10 best break points are used and the rest are ignored. However, the user is notified of this.
