APPENDIX B. VALID ENTRIES FOR SELECT FIELDS (3/21/1997)
There are fields in the SHIMS database that require specification of a person, office, or agency.
To help ensure consistency in the values of these fields, this appendix lists recommended values
for these fields. Included are abbreviations for many governmental agencies involved with the
NWS hydrometeorological program, including federal, state, county, and local agencies. The list
was intended to include the majority of cooperating offices; regrettably, it does not account for
every office that is involved with and supports the activities of the NWS. This is particularly true
for the local offices and interests. In addition to listing the external agencies/offices, this appendix
provides a list of NWS WFO and RFC office identifiers and a list of state numbers.
Given below is a list of database fields whose values should be selected from the abbreviations in
this appendix, if one exists. The fields are listed by the convention: tablename.fieldname. All
fields are alphanumeric with their length given in parentheses, followed by a brief description.
Note that the data for all listed fields apply to a single specified location in the database.
Contact.contact (24) - Name of person to contact
Obs.surname (28) - Name of observer/institution taking observations
Rvrsta.agency (20) - Agency responsible for rating at river location
Dcp.downer (10) - Owner of the DCP
Gage.owc (10) - Owner of the gage
Telem.towner (10) - Owner of the telemetry device
Reservr.owner (10) - Owner of the reservoir
Extcoop.agency (8) - Name of external cooperating agency
Extcoop.office (20) - Name of the specific cooperating office within the agency
Location.hsa (3) - Name of the Hydrologic Service Area with responsibility
Location.wfo (3) - Name of the WFO with warning area responsibility
Location.rfc (5) - Name of the RFC with forecast responsibility
Location.sn (10) - Station number
For a location's external cooperator(s), note that the agency/office information is given in paired
fields. For example, a typical entry may be USCE SWA, for the Corps of Engineers,
Albuquerque District. For all other fields, the office is given as a single field. For these single
fields, the data should still be treated as two separate entities within the database field - simply
enter a space in between the agency name and the specific office within that agency. Of course,
for many situations, there is no distinction between the agency name and the agency office; for
example, MPC for Montana Power Company. In these cases, enter the appropriate abbreviation.
The recommendations given below give the federal agencies first. First a list of the agency
abbreviations is given, followed by a list of offices for that agency. Following this are the
external agency/office abbreviations, grouped by the NWS regions.
I. Federal Agencies
Listed alphabetically. For most agencies, the offices within the agencies are listed
immediately after this list. A few agencies listed are cabinet level agencies. For
agencies, or offices within agencies, which are not listed in this document, please
try and follow the naming conventions established with the listed agencies/offices.
