4. UPGRADE INSTALLATION STEPS
SHIMS Version 4.11 is an upgrade from an existing SHIMS 4.02 database. Almost every file
in SHIMS is affected. Follow the steps listed below to perform the upgrade.
a. Check your database for the following:
i. The structure should be SHIMS 4.02. If you are using an old version of
SHIMS, you must upgrade to SHIMS 4.02 before proceeding. Contact your
regional office for help.
ii. There are no blank records in any of the tables. Inside of SHIMS, use the
Tables command to help determine this. Inside of Paradox, use the View
command. In either case, blank record will appear at the top of each table.
Delete any blank records. Tables that are completely empty are acceptable.
b. Backup your existing SHIMS database. The installation process should be uneventful,
but it is always a good idea to backup before making major changes. Use the Backup
command inside of SHIMS for this purpose.
c. Copy SHIMS411.ZIP to the SHIMS directory.
d. This ZIP file was compressed using the version 2.04g of PKZIP. Using version 2.04g
of PKUNZIP, type:
PKUNZIP -O SHIMS411
This will UNZIP the new script files. Note that any existing data will NOT be
overwritten at this point.
e. Now type:
PARADOX INSHIM41
This will scan your existing database and check to see if the structure is correct. Next
it will move the existing data into the new tables. Lastly, it will create a new
SHIMS.LIB file. The conversion program moves data into different fields. It is a
good idea to check the Location, RiverGage, and ForecastPoint screens and spot-check
the data of a location before printing the first report.
f. The information in SHIMSINI.SC has not changed from SHIMS 4.02 so editing is not
necessary. Below is a list of every variable in SHIMSINI.SC for reference:
hydrologist - The name of the hydrologist that will appear on several reports.
masterpw - The password given to allow the user to edit data. The user must
type the password exactly in the correct case.
tenyear - The date to determine ten years ago in the E-19A. Usually it will
be Jan. 1st of ten years ago, although it can be any date. Enter as
MM/DD/YYYY without enclosing in quotes.
lastyear - The date to determine the last year in E-19A. Usually it will be
Jan. 1st of the current year but could be Oct. 1st for the water
year or any other date. Enter as MM/DD/YYYY without
enclosing in quotes.
cdhdr - The first part of the CD-404 order number; e.g. 423BNW6W.
This must be changed every fiscal year.
office - The name of the hydrologic service area office as printed on
several reports.
phone - The phone number of the office as printed on location ID request
reports.
region - The office's region as printed on location ID request reports.
regionno - The office's region number as printed on location ID request
reports.
porte - The port that is connected to an Epson-compatible printer. The
possible choices are "LPT1", "LPT2", "LPT3", "COM1",
"COM2", "COM3", "COM4", or "".
portl - The port that is connected to a LaserJet-compatible printer. The
possible choices are the same as those for porte.
porto - The port that is connected to a user-defined printer. If you have
a printer that is neither Epson nor Laser-Jet compatible, find the
manual with the printer codes, and call Mike Callahan. The
choices are the same as porte. Most offices should use "".
prtvar - The name of the default printer. The only possible choices are
"Epson", "LaserJet", or "Other". The case of the letters must
match exactly. Typing another name WILL NOT WORK.
flowstaff - If you want the flow to appear on the E-19 staff picture page
when choosing to print all pages of an E-19, make this True.
Otherwise, leave it False. Do not enclose in quotes.
g. The installation is complete. When you are sure the script files are working correctly,
delete SHIMS411.ZIP from the SHIMS directory.
