7. VIEWING AND EDITING FORMS

When selecting the Forms option from the Main window menu bar, a list of available forms
is shown.

                             Forms Pulldown Menu

Selecting one of these results in that form being displayed, which allows
the user to review and edit in SHIMS at a detailed level. Many of these forms combine
data from different database tables. If you have been granted editing permission, you
can edit the data.

All the forms provide a speed bar which provides the options described below. Most of
the speed bar commands are identical to those in the Summary Screen, with some noted
exceptions.

    Lid, Zoom, Again -
Refer to descriptions for these commands that are given with the discussion of the Main
         screen.

    Prev, Next -
Refer to descriptions for these commands that are given with the discussion of the Summary
         screen.

If you are viewing only, then the Field command performs as described for the Summary
screen; also, there is no Undo command. If you are editing, these two commands are
available and function as described below.

Undo - This command restores a record to what it was before editing. This only works as long as you
              do not leave the record.

Field - Go into field editing. Clicking on this allows you to see and edit the current field. To end
editing either press Enter or click on Field.

To move around on the screen, click on the field of interest. To delete records press the Del
key. After pressing Del, you will see a confirmation dialog box. Click on Delete to delete the
record. If you click on Undo immediately after clicking on Delete, you can undelete the
record.

To insert records press the Ins key. You will see a blank section. Fill in the data as best as
possible using the guidelines in Appendix A. If there is no data for a particular section, leave
it blank. For example, if there is no observer at a location, leave the observer section blank.
After you are finished with a page in a multipage form, click on a field in the master section
and click on or press PgDn. Continue filling in data until the form is complete. Your data
will be automatically saved when you move to another location. If you accidently press Ins and
see a blank section, press Del, to prevent inserting a blank record into the database. Blank
records can cause problems and should be avoided.

When you are finished with the form you must press F2 or click on Done to return to the
main screen and continue in SHIMS. You cannot work on more than one form at a time.

Each form contains a collection of data fields stored in the SHIMS database. The Forms
group these data fields into the primary feature or function which the data field represents.
Because of the nature of the data, some fields could belong to multiple groups, and certainly
there is a certain degree of judgement used when deciding how to group the data fields. Some
of these groupings contain so much data that the Forms span multiple pages (i.e. screens).
Listed below are the forms provided by the SHIMS program, the number of pages for each,
and a brief description.

    a. Location Form (2 pages)
Information that applies to any location, regardless of whether the location is a river location,
observer location, precipitation station, official forecast point, etc. This form is the master
form for all locations and must be filled out first.

    b. River Gage Form (2 pages)
Information that applies to a river gage location. This form must be filled out after the
         Location form.

    c. Forecast Point Form (3 pages)
Information that applies to official river forecast points, beyond what is described in the River
         Gage form.

    d. Reservoir Form (1 page)
Information that is specific to a reservoir location.

    e. RiverPro Form (1 page)
Information for an official river forecast point that is used for the river product formatter
         application.

    f. Site-specific Form (1 page)
Information for a river gage location which will be modeled with a headwater model. This
may or may not be for an official forecast point.

The following pages contain screen dumps of each of the Forms provided by SHIMS. After
each form is a list that describes briefly each of the fields in the form. Detailed descriptions
of the forms are provided in Appendix A on a form-by-form basis. Appendix B gives the
recommended values for those fields related to external agencies, cooperating authorities,
and office abbreviations.
