Matt Newman
Dr. Newman is a University of Colorado research scientist working within the PSD division of NOAA's Earth Systems Research Laboratory. He studies atmospheric and oceanic variations on time scales ranging from weeks to decades. He has served on the US CLIVAR Decadal Predictability Working Group and is currently on the US CLIVAR ENSO Diversity Working Group and a co-lead of NOAA/CPO/MAPP's Prediction Task Force. Much of his work has involved the construction of empirical models of climate variability that can be used for both prediction and diagnostic studies. Two such models, for the evolution of 5-day averaged maps of tropical winds and convection, and 12-month averaged maps of global surface temperatures, are run in near realtime on the PSD website and have skill comparable to operational models. He is particularly focused on diagnosing observed climate dynamical systems and how well these systems are replicated in numerical computer models.
