Professional Competency Unit 2:
Demonstrate Understanding of Climate Variability and Change Sufficient to Apply to Local Services
Instructional Component 2.4: Seasonal to Interannual Climate Variability

The training objective of this instructional component is to get familiar with Seasonal to Interannual Climate variability on examples of Elño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Arctic Oscillation (AO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), drought, and volcanic effects. Each climate phenomenon is described in terms of its physical mechanisms, life cycles, predictability and impact on weather or climate patterns. To meet the Instructional Component 2.4 requirements a trainee is expected to complete the following modules:

2.4.1. ENSO
  • The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Cycle (webcast)
  • ENSO and Beyond (webcast)
  • ENSO: Physical Mechanism, Prediction, and Impacts (residence training on Climate Variability)
  • ENSO: Communicating to Local Customers (residence training on Operational Climate Services)

2.4.2. AO/NAO (residence training on Climate Variability)

    2.4.3. Drought

  • Understanding Drought (*webcast)
  • Drought: Physical Mechanism, Prediction, and Impacts (residence training on Climate Variability)
  • Drought: Communicating to Local Customers (residence training on Operational Climate Services)

2.4.4. Volcanic Effects (not available at this time)
