Lightning Fatalities
Lightning fatalities increased slightly in 1995 with 85 as opposed to 1994's total of 69. This number is the same as the 30-year average which is also 85 deaths a year. Once again, Florida had the highest number of lightning fatalities
with 14. Ohio and Indiana were next with 8 and 6, respectively. In 1995, over eight times as many males as females were lightning strike victims. The greatest number of fatalities 76 percent were between the ages of 10 and 59. Sixty (60) fatalities occurred in the open, while 9 were under a tree, 7 in a boat, 5 playing golf, 2 in or near a building, and 2 in other locations.
