MARINE POINT FORECASTS

A National Weather Service "Marine Point Forecast" refers a text forecast for a single point generated from a forecaster-generated gridded data set known as the National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) also used to produce graphics.

For mariners and others where weather is critical to safety or planned activities, users may not wish to rely on the forecast for a single point. The forecast for a single point may not be fully representative of the conditions that might be experienced. It is therefore recommended that mariners also view available text and graphic forecasts for the general area in which they are operating to maintain greater domain awareness. The point forecast pages each provide a link to the relevant marine zone forecast which may be found in the "Additional Forecasts and Information" table at the bottom right corner, as well as a link to NDFD graphics in the bottom left corner.

Please Note: Although the forecast conditions for a particular point forecast may not exceed the advisory/watch/warning criteria of a Small Craft Advisory, Gale, Storm etc, these are issued for the the entire zone in which the point resides and mariners should act accordingly. Being a forecast for a particular point, the forecast conditions may vary significantly from other nearby points and the zone forecast for the general area. The marine forecasts heard on NOAA Weather Radio are derived from the zone forecasts.

Further information on the Marine Point Forecast and "Forecast-at-a-Glance" may be found here.

These marine point forecasts are also available via the maps found at the relevant forecast office. At some offices clicking on the map will link to the zone forecast and then allow further zooming to the point of interest whereas at other offices the first link is directly to a point forecast with the further option to link to the zone forecast which includes that point.

The map interface above may also be used to link to point forecasts for land.

A number of users have inquired about the addition of air temperature and other items of interest to the marine point forecast pages. Be aware air tempearature and other parameters such as precipitation potential are viewable by clicking on the "Hourly Weather Graph" in the "Additional Forecasts and Information" table at the bottom right corner of each point forecast.
