Subject:  Removal of Buoy 41036 effective January 2015

In early to mid-January 2015, NWS will no longer support buoy

41036, at 34 degrees 12'25" N 76 degrees 56'56" W, about 40 miles east of

Wilmington, NC. This buoy is not part of the NWS-operated federal

backbone. The buoy was sponsored by the Coastal Ocean Research

and Monitoring Program at the University of North Carolina,

Wilmington. The university stopped funding the maintenance of the

buoy in 2013. NOAA has been unable to find another sponsor.

The buoy is at risk of breaking free from its mooring and

becoming a hazard to navigation. Therefore, it will be retrieved.
