Subject:  Effective immediately, National Data Buoy Center

          Coastal-Marine Automated Network (C-MAN) Station CHLV2

located on the Chesapeake Light Tower has been

C-MAN station CHLV2 was established by the National Data Buoy

Center (NDBC) in the mid 1980s on the (former) USCG Chesapeake

Light Tower, about 15 miles east of the mouth of the Chesapeake

Bay. In 2012, the tower was deemed structurally unsound and was

condemned by the US Coast Guard. NDBC lost access to the tower

to service and maintain the C-MAN equipment. C-MAN CHLV2

continued to operate, transmitting data until early July 2016.

There are no platforms near the tower to which the C-MAN station

could be moved, therefore CHLV2 has been discontinued and

disestablished effective immediately. NOAA operates several

weather stations and buoys within a few miles of the Chesapeake

Light Tower, including three water level network stations at the

mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and a Chesapeake Bay Interpretive

Buoy just inside Chesapeake Bay.
