Subject:  Termination of the NWS Automated Radar Observations

          and Radar Coded Message Mosaics.

          Effective October 12, 2016

On or about Wednesday October 12, 2016, the NWS will stop

dissemination of the text-based Automated Radar Observations

(AUTOROBs) and GRIB-formatted Radar Coded Message(RCM)-based

mosaic products.  These products were distributed under the

following WMO headers:

SDUS4x KWBC  Radar Observation(AUTOROB) messages, x=1 through 6

HAXA00 KWBC  radar mosaic from Radar Coded Message (RCM)

The AUTOROBs are a legacy manual summary of information from the

umbrella of local radars, provided in text format.  With the

advent of the WSR-88D radars and their automated Radar Coded

Messages (RCMs), the AUTOROBs were developed to maintain the

legacy text format.   The HAXA00 radar reflectivity mosaics were

developed from the WSR-88D RCMs.  They are a national 10-km

radar reflectivity grid in GRIB format.

These products are being removed as part of the NWSTG Re-

Architecture project.  These legacy products are no longer

sustainable due to the lack of an operations and maintenance

support mechanism, and replacement products are available from

the Aviation Weather Center (AWC) and via the Multi-Radar,

Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system currently in operations.

Radar products from the Aviation Weather Center are available

More information about MRMS can be found at:

MRMS products can be obtained via NOAAPORT, via LDM

distribution, or through the MRMS website.
