NWS Winter Weather Notification Procedures

The NWS will follow these procedures to notify government officials of potentially hazardous winter weather in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Greater Washington, D.C. Commuting Area this winter.

The NOAA National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Sterling, Virginia, will send a message to this list whenever they issue a winter weather watch, warning, advisory or materially change the forecast amount of snow or ice for the OPM Greater Washington, D.C., commuting area.   The purpose is to notify federal and local government official about winter conditions that might cause the closure of the federal government or otherwise affect commuting conditions.

The messages will briefly describe the event and provide a link to the "Winter Storm" web page  (http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/winterstorm).  The web page has links to a forecast snow/ice map, a weather briefing intended for OPM and other federal, state and local government officials, the text of the watch, warning, or advisory, and other forecast and observational information.
