| As a result of the requirement
in METAR for the use of 4-letter site identifiers as opposed to 3-character site
identifiers used at many sites in the current SA code, a number of identifier
changes will take place. Some will actually occur after METAR has been implemented.
The FAA is the source of change for these identifiers and as they forward changes
to the NWS the changes will be posted on this page by their effective date. These
listings are not meant to preclude the FAA's normal notification process for identifier
changes via the publication of their Location Identifier Handbook 7350.6 . It
is merely provided as information to aid in the transition to the METAR code.
The responsible FAA organization for making these identifier changes is the National
Flight Data Center (ATM-612). A subscription to the FAA's Handbook 7350.6 is available
by writing to the following address or by calling 202-512-1800 (voice) or 202-512-2250
(fax): Superintendent of Documents Government Printing Office
Washington, DC 20402 The listings provided on the home page give
you the city/state, airport name (if available), old 3-character identifier, new
3-letter identifier, and new 4-letter International
Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) identifier. Please note that for identifier
changes in the conterminous 48 states, the ICAO identifier merely prefixes a "K"
in front of the new 3-letter site identifier. For Alaska sites, a "PA"
is prefixed which means that one of the 3 letters of the site identifier is truncated.
Hawaii sites will have a prefix of "PH" added and Guam will have a prefix
of "PG" added. Like the Alaska sites, the Hawaii "PH" or Guam
"PG" prefixes will mean one of the 3-letters in the identifier may have
been truncated. The official list of ICAO identifiers is published by the
ICAO in document 7910. This document is available from the ICAO at the following
address or by calling 514-954-8219 (voice) or 514-954-6077(fax): International
