Proposed Fire Zone Change for Berkeley County, SC

 

This proposal addresses the need to modify the existing fire zone configuration for Berkeley County, SC, which is located in the WFO Charleston, SC County Warning and Forecast Area.  WFO Charleston issues fire weather forecasts for the entire county.  More specific fire forecast services are needed. 

 

Given the large size of the county, it is believed that the best method to initiate such services is to split the county into two distinct “zones.”  This will allow forecasters to initiate more specific warning and forecast services for the “tidal” portions of Berkeley County, SC.

 

 

Current Fire Zone Name and UGC Code:

  • Berkeley – SCZ045

Proposed Fire Zone Name and UGC Code Changes:

  • Inland Berkeley – SCZ045
  • Tidal Berkeley – SCZ052

 

Fire Zone Boundary Description:

 

The proposed Tidal Berkeley zone (SCZ052) will encompass the area bounded by the following:

  • Intersection of I-526 to the Charleston/Berkeley county line
  • Intersection of the Charleston/Berkeley county line to the CSX railroad located just north of I-526.
  • CSX railroad track to its intersection with Cypress Gardens Road (this is essentially the western periphery of the Charleston Naval Weapons Station)
  • A line due east of the Cypress Gardens Road intersection to an intersection with Cainhoy Road.
  • Cainhoy Road to its intersection with Clements Ferry Road.
  • Clements Ferry Road to Highway 41.
  • Highway 41 to the Charleston County line.
  • Charleston/Berkeley county line back to the intersection with I-526 (essentially following the Wando and Cooper Rivers around Daniel Island).

 

Inland Berkeley zone (SCZ045) will include the remainder of Berkeley county outside of the new Tidal Berkeley zone. The community of Moncks Corner will reside in the Inland Berkeley zone...including portions of Interstate 26
