Subject: Seeking Public Comment and Review on Experimental

Probabilistic Snowfall Internet Graphical Products in

         the Baltimore/Washington Area Through April 30, 2014

Beginning November 15, 2013, through April 30, 2014, NWS is

seeking public review and comment on experimental probabilistic

snowfall internet graphical products to be issued as part of the

Pilot Project at the NWS Weather Forecast Office in Sterling, VA,

serving Baltimore, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and surrounding

areas. The experimental probabilistic snowfall forecasts are

available online at:

These graphics will complement existing NWS "deterministic"

snowfall forecasts, the traditional method of forecasting a

single snowfall accumulation. The experimental graphics will show

the probability of exceeding certain snowfall accumulation

thresholds, along with the "best" (minimum), and "worst"

(maximum) snowfall accumulation scenarios. Taken together, the

graphics will indicate areas of low and/or high uncertainty in

the snowfall forecast.

The experimental forecasts are described in detail, with example

graphics included, in a Product Description Document available

online at:

Comments and feedback on this experimental service are

welcomed at:

Comments will be collected from November 15, 2013, until April

30, 2014. In conjunction with the Pilot Project evaluation, NWS

will evaluate feedback and determine whether to transition the

experimental service to operational status, discontinue it, or

revise and extend the experimental feedback period. NWS also will

evaluate the potential for expansion of this capability to other

NWS offices.

probabilistic snowfall forecasts, please contact:
