Subject:   Soliciting Public Comments through March 21, 2014

           on the Removal of GFS-based products

 

The National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP)

is seeking comments through March 21, 2014, on a proposal to

stop producing several obsolete products based on output from

the Global Forecast System (GFS) model. Legacy products being

suggested for removal include gridded, text and graphical

products listed below. If NWS decides to terminate a product, it

will be removed from all dissemination sources, including

NOAAPORT, the NCEP and NWS ftp server and all other sources.

 

Gridded Products Proposed for Removal:

- 0.5 degree resolution RTG Sea Surface Temperature(SST)analysis 

- 1 degree Reynolds 7-day SST analysis on Family of Services

  grid

- 1 degree Reynolds 7-day SST analysis on WAFS grid

- GRIB1 GFS model output on AWIPS grid 213 for a 95km CONUS

  domain

- GRIB1 GFS model output on AWIPS grid 211 for an 80km CONUS

  domain

 

Text Products Proposed for Removal:

- Upper Wind Fallout Forecasts

- GFS output in legacy GRID format    

- Text bulletins of ship observations from GFS analysis

 

Graphical Products Proposed for Removal:

- Redbook graphics plots of normal maximum and minimum

  temperature

- Faxsimile (FAX) charts of winds and temperatures at various

  flight levels

- FAX charts of surface analyses for various domains

NWS will evaluate all comments to determine whether to proceed

with this change. If approved, NWS will send a Technical

Implementation Notice giving 30 days notice of the

implementation date.
