Subject:  NWS Watches/Warnings/Advisories in CAP and ATOM based

Formats to Transition to Operational Status on

          March 15, 2011.

Internet based feeds of NWS watch/warning/advisory products

using the XML-based Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) v1.1 and ATOM

message formats will become operational on or about March 15,

This announcement is a follow-up to the Public Information

Statement entitled, Public Comments Solicited on Experimental

Common Alerting Protocol Version 1.1 Messages, from

August 22, 2008.

The previous announcement stated that CAP v1.1 was expected to

replace existing NWS CAP v1.0 messages.  Notice was subsequently

placed on

http://www.weather.gov/alerts

stating that the replacement would occur gradually by March 15,

The new date for replacement is March 15, 2011, coincident with

the CAP v1.1 feeds becoming operational.  At that time, NWS CAP

v1.1 and ATOM messages will become available at

http://alerts.weather.gov/cap/

Users targeting the CAP v1.0 and ATOM messages at

http://www.weather.gov/alerts

as well as the CAP v1.1 messages and ATOM messages at

http://www.weather.gov/alerts-beta

will be redirected to the operational CAP v1.1 and ATOM messages

at the new location.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced the

adoption of CAP v1.2 as the standard for emergency alerts in a

press release on September 30, 2010.  The press release can be

found at

http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=52880

The NWS is beginning work on CAP v1.2 and expects to offer an

experimental CAP v1.2 feed of NWS alerts during the

Spring/Summer of 2011.
