Internet based feeds of NWS watch/warning/advisory products using the XML-based Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) v1.1 and ATOM message formats will become operational on or about March 15, This announcement is a follow-up to the Public Information Statement entitled, Public Comments Solicited on Experimental Common Alerting Protocol Version 1.1 Messages, from August 22, 2008. The previous announcement stated that CAP v1.1 was expected to replace existing NWS CAP v1.0 messages. Notice was subsequently placed on http://www.weather.gov/alerts stating that the replacement would occur gradually by March 15, The new date for replacement is March 15, 2011, coincident with the CAP v1.1 feeds becoming operational. At that time, NWS CAP v1.1 and ATOM messages will become available at http://alerts.weather.gov/cap/ Users targeting the CAP v1.0 and ATOM messages at http://www.weather.gov/alerts as well as the CAP v1.1 messages and ATOM messages at http://www.weather.gov/alerts-beta will be redirected to the operational CAP v1.1 and ATOM messages at the new location. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced the adoption of CAP v1.2 as the standard for emergency alerts in a press release on September 30, 2010. The press release can be found at http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=52880 The NWS is beginning work on CAP v1.2 and expects to offer an experimental CAP v1.2 feed of NWS alerts during the Spring/Summer of 2011.
