Subject: Discontinuance of the National Public
Observing Program
(NPOP) Effective October 1, 2012
Effective Monday,
October 1, 2012, the National Public Observing
Program (NPOP)
was discontinued. The NPOP was an automated
telephone answering system which provided users a toll
free
number to communicate severe weather reports to
their local NWS
Weather
Forecast Office (WFO). This system was discontinued due
to the increased variety of other reporting
methods now available
to relay storm reports to WFOs; including
social media, e-mail
and direct phone contact with the local WFO.
A voice message
has been added to the NPOP automatic answering
system advising users of the discontinuation in the
event users
contact this phone number.
The NWS continues
to welcome and solicit severe weather reports
from the public.
Local WFOs can provide appropriate methods to
relay severe weather reports as described
above.
