Subject: Western Region WFO use of Weather Research
and
Forecasting (WRF) Model Output will
become Operational
Effective February 26, 2013
Effective
February 26, 2013, at 1800 Coordinated Universal Time
(UTC), Weather
Forecast Office (WFO) Weather Research and
Forecasting (WRF)
model output will become an operational
product in the NWS Western Region. The WRF Model
Output has been
available as an operational product at WFO Sacramento
(STO), CA,
since 2009 and in experimental status at several
other Western
Region
WFOs since 2011. The
decision to make it an operational
product available for use at all Western Region WFOs
is based
upon favorable comments received during the
period of public
comment and review.
The WRF Model
Output is currently available on the following
webpages:
Monterey (MTR),
CA: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mtr/mtrwrf.php
Phoenix (PSR),
AZ: http://wrh.noaa.gov/psr/wrf
Pocatello (PIH),
ID: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/pih/wrf/
Sacramento (STO),
CA: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/sto/sacwrf.php
Salt Lake City
(SLC), UT:
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/slc/projects/wrf/wrf.html
San Diego (SGX),
CA: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/sgx/wrf
Other WR WFOs may
choose to run and display WRF model output in
the future.
The WRF is run
locally at a WFO. The WRF ARW or WRF NMM
generates hourly to 3-hourly output from 24 to 120
hours,
depending on element. The high resolution model is
used for
operational forecasting and research at the local WFO.
Model
output graphics are posted on a WFO Webpage. Some
of the fields
include: temperature, dew point, relative humidity,
wind,
precipitation amount and type and sea level pressure.
