Subject: NWS Making Changes to Icons Associated With Tropical

Cyclone Point-and-Click Forecasts effective by the

beginning of the 2017 Tropical Cyclone seasons

The NWS will be making changes to icons associated with tropical

cyclone Point and Click forecast web pages effective by the

beginning of the 2017 Tropical Cyclone seasons. Point-and-Click

forecasts can be viewed by entering location information at:

http://www.weather.gov

Current New Forecast-at-a-Glance Icons can be seen at this URL

(scroll about halfway down to tropical icons):

http://www.weather.gov/forecast-icons

The NWS will remove the marine flags from the tropical icons on

the Point and Click by reducing the number of tropical icons

from four to two. The icon presently identified for a Hurricane

Watch on the New Forecast-at-a-Glance Icons webpage will be used

when hurricane conditions are expected or possible. The icon

presently identified for a Tropical Storm Watch will be used

when tropical storm conditions are expected or possible.

The marine flag icons on the Point and Click forecasts used to

depict tropical cyclone wind conditions are confusing.  The

flags are not intended for use over land, and there are cases

where the flag displayed does not accurately depict the

conditions expected. For example, gale and storm-force winds

both fall within the range of tropical storm force winds.
