SUBJECT: Change to the WMO Headers for the Observations from the

Natural Resources Conservation Service Products on or

         After December 5, 2016

Effective on or after December 5, 2016, NWS will change the way

it collects and disseminates (via WMO Header ID changes) Natural

Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the United States

Department of Agriculture SNOTEL (SNOw TELemetry) and Soil

Climate Analysis Network (SCAN) hydrometeorological

observations.

The NRCS currently gathers these observations, encodes them in

Standard Hydrometeorological Exchange Format (SHEF), and then

sends these messages to the NWS for distribution using the WMO

header / national center ID of KSCS (representing the NRCS).

On or after December 5, 2016, the NWS will pull the observations

from an NRCS web service and encode them in SHEF for

distribution using the WMO header / national center ID KWBC to

reflect this change from the NRCS to the NWS.

For SNOTEL products:

to AWIPS ID or product format/content.

The old WMO ID header products will continue to be available for

at least 75 days (February 19, 2017) to aid partners and users

in the transition.
