Subject:   Discontinue Hurricane Wave (multi_2) Model:

           Effective July 11, 2017

Effective on or about July 11, 2017, beginning with the 1200

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) run, the National Centers for

Environmental Prediction (NCEP) will discontinue the Hurricane

Wave (Multi_2) Model and all output. This includes NOAAPORT and

NCEP Web services.

NCEP solicited comments on the proposed discontinuation of the

Hurricane Wave modeling system under PNS 17-06. The proposal was

to replace these products with higher-quality data generated by

the next coupled Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting

(HWRF) system. NCEP received no negative feedback so we will

proceed with this change.

The difference between the two global wave guidance systems

(Multi_1 and Multi_2) are that Multi_1 runs using just the

Global Forecast System (GFS) forcings, while Multi_2 runs using

a blend of HWRF and GFS forcings. The hurricane winds are

interpolated from the atmospheric domains to the wave domains.

When there is not an active tropical system, the Multi_2 is

forced by the GFS winds and therefore the Multi_2 output is

identical to the Multi_1 output.

All output under the following NCEP web service directories will

be discontinued:

http://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/wave/prod/multi_2.

YYYYMMDD/

http://www.ftp.ncep.noaa.gov/data/nccf/com/wave/prod/multi_2.YYY

YMMDD/

ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/wave/prod/multi_2.YYYY

MMDD/

Where YYYYMMDD is year, month, and day

All output on NOAAPORT/SBN with the following WMO header string

matches will be discontinued:

E***88 KWBU for gridded GRIB2 products

AG**4* KWBC for text bulletins
