Subject: Discontinue Experimental Holdover Threat Index

Product for the Elko Weather Forecast Office

         Effective July 13, 2017

The experimental holdover threat index will be discontinued

after July 13, 2017. In the Great Basin, a threat to large fire

spread occurs when relative humidity is low and strong winds

develop a day or two after a lightning event. The experimental

holdover threat index is a web graphic that displays the

expected threat of holdover fires to grow and spread within

specific fire weather forecast zones within the Weather Forecast

Office Elko county warning area.

These events have been found to occur quite infrequently.

Therefore, due to the infrequency of these events, it is not

effective to maintain this product operationally.
