SUBJECT: Changes to Tropical Cyclone Public Advisory

products beginning on or around May 15, 2018

Beginning on or around May 15, 2018, the NWS National Hurricane

Center (NHC), Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC), Weather

Prediction Center (WPC), and the Weather Forecast Office (WFO)

in Tiyan, Guam, will change the content of their Tropical

Cyclone Public Advisories (TCP) to allow for discussion of the

forecast period beyond 48 hours.

Before this change, TCPs were limited to discussing a tropical

cyclone track and intensity forecast through 48 hours. This

change will allow TCPs to discuss the tropical cyclone forecast

routinely through 72 hours, with flexibility to discuss the

forecast through 5 days when conditions warrant.

To accommodate this change, the TCP section header:

DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

will be changed to:

DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

An example of the change can be found at:

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/productexamples/

More information on the TCP product can be found at:

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnhcprod.shtml#TCP

In addition, for the 2018 hurricane season and beyond, TCPs from

WPC will be issued in mixed case and no longer contain rainfall

totals and wind gust observations.  These changes are being made

to ensure consistency in the format and content of TCP products

provided by all NWS offices that issue them.

An example of the change to the WPC TCP can be found at:

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/productexamples/

The rainfall totals and wind gust observations that had

previously been provided in the WPC TCP product can now be found

in Storm Summary Products issued by WPC.  These products are

found on the web at:

http://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/winter_storm_summaries/winter_storm_summaries.shtml

WPC Storm Summary products can also be found using their AWIPS

Product Identifiers (PIL) and World Meteorological Office (WMO)

Code.
