Subject:    WFOs to be allowed to issue Coastal Hazard Message,

Special Weather Statements, and Surf Zone Forecast

products during Tropical Cyclone events effective on

            or about May 31, 2018

Effective on or about May 31, 2018, Weather Forecast Offices

(WFOs) will be allowed to issue Coastal Hazard Message (CFW),

Special Weather Statement (SPS), and Surf Zone Forecast (SRF)

products, as appropriate, for areas where tropical cyclone

related warnings and watches are also in effect.

The current policy suspends issuance of CFW, SPS and SRF

products when certain tropical cyclone warnings and watches are

in effect. After May 31, 2018, all WFOs will be able to use

these products to communicate the hazards from tropical

cyclones.

NWS Instruction 10-320, Surf Zone Forecast and Coastal/Lakeshore

Hazard Services provides the issuance policy for SRF and CFW

products:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/directives/sym/pd01003020curr.pdf

Current policies concerning when CFW, SPS and SRF products can

be issued during tropical cyclone events can be seen in Tables

1, 2a, 2b, 3 and 4 in NWS Instruction 10-601, Weather Forecast

Office Tropical Cyclone Products:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/directives/sym/pd01006001curr.pdf

NWSI 10-601 and NWSI 10-320 are expected to be updated by June

1, 2018. The updated Instructions will reflect the new policies

that WFOs can issue CFW, SPS, and SRF products during tropical

cyclone events. The new policies will also be reflected in

Tables 1, 2a, 2b, 3 and 4 of NWSI 10-601.
