Subject:   Discontinuation of Experimental High Resolution

Ensemble Forecast Products: Effective Feb. 11, 2014

Effective on or about Tuesday, February 11, 2014, the National

Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) will stop generating

all High Resolution Ensemble Forecast (HREF) products from the

High Resolution Window (HIRESW) runs. NWS began generating these

experimental probabilistic products, which merge information

from the Short Range Ensemble Forecast (SREF) with HIRESW, in

March 2011 primarily in response to concerns about Hanson Dam in

Washington failing aas a result of heavy rains over a short

period of time.

The risk of dam failure has since abated. The HREF products are

being discontinued to simplify the NCEP production suite.

Products first produced in HREF, such as the probability of

accumulating more than 4" or 6" of precipitation in a 3-hour

period are now part of the output suite for SREF.

The HREF output had been sent directly to Seattle, WA, Weather

Forecast Office and made available on the NCEP FTP server at:

and had been made available on the NCEP NOMADS server at:
