Subject:   Upgrade to Automated Sea Ice Drift Model:

           Effective September 9, 2014

On Tuesday, September 9, 2014, starting with the 1200 Universal

Coordinated Time (UTC) cycle, the National Centers for

Environmental Prediction (NCEP) will make a change to the sea ice

drift model to improve the skill of the model.

NCEP will run the model system changes from ensemble (GEFS) input

rather than GFS single deterministic. This change offers a Slight

improvement in model skill as assessed by both distance and

direction measures. This change will not affect data format and

delivery.

The Ice Drift Model guidance products will be available in ASCII

and KML formats on the NCEP Server:

http://www.ftp.ncep.noaa.gov/data/nccf/com/omb/prod/seaice_drift.YYYYMMDD

or

ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/omb/prod/seaice_drift.YYYYMMDD

where YYYYMMDD corresponds to the four digit year, two digit

month and two digit day.

The data will also be available on NOAAPORT with the WMO headers:

FZAK41 KWNO - Alaska

FZXX41 KWNO - CONUS

The Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) has a publicly available

website which can provide users more information concerning the

ice drift model:
