NOAA's National Weather Service
- NWS Homepage
- NWS Public Affairs
- Weather Forecast Office Contacts: NWS WFOs provide timely and accurate local forecasts and warnings to protect life and property and enhance the national economy.
- Digital Forecast Data: NWS provides access to gridded forecasts of sensible weather elements (e.g., cloud cover, maximum temperature) through the National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD). NDFD contains a seamless mosaic of digital forecasts from NWS field offices working in collaboration with the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The database is available to all customers and partners from the public, private and academic sectors.
River Forecast Centers
RFCs produce timely and accurate water forecasts and information to support the NWS, customers, and partners, using the best scientific principles to integrate and model water, weather, and climate information. RFCs collaborate with partners to develop and implement improved procedures to enhance water forecast services.
NWS Regional Offices
National Centers for Environmental Prediction
NCEP delivers national and global weather, water, climate and space weather guidance, forecasts, warnings and analyses to its Partners and External User Communities.
These products and services are based on a service-science legacy and respond to user needs to protect life and property, enhance the nation's economy and support the nation's growing need for environmental information.
- Aviation Weather Center provides aviation warnings and forecasts of hazardous flight conditions at all levels within domestic and international air space.
- Climate Prediction Center monitors and forecasts short-term climate fluctuations and provides information on the effects climate patterns can have on the nation.
- Environmental Modeling Center develops and improves numerical weather, climate, hydrological and ocean prediction through a broad program in partnership with the research community.
- Hydrometeorological Prediction Center provides nationwide analysis and forecast guidance products out through seven days.
- NCEP Central Operations sustains and executes the operational suite of numerical analyses and forecast models and prepares NCEP products for dissemination.
- Ocean Prediction Center issues weather warnings and forecasts out to five days for the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans north of 30 degrees North.
- Space Environment Center provides space weather alerts and warnings for disturbances that can affect people and equipment working in space and on earth.
- Storm Prediction Center provides tornado and severe weather watches for the contiguous United States along with a suite of hazardous weather forecasts.
- Tropical Prediction Center includes the National Hurricane Center and provides forecasts of the movement and strength of tropical weather systems and issues watches and warnings for the U.S. and surrounding areas.
National Specialized Centers
- National Severe Storms Laboratory: NSSL leads the way in investigations of all aspects of severe and hazardous weather. Headquartered in Norman, Oklahoma, with staff in Colorado, Nevada, Washington, Utah and Wisconsin, NSSL in close partnership with the NWS, is dedicated to improving lead time and accuracy of severe weather warnings and forecasts o save lives and reduce property damage.
- Spaceflight Meteorology Group: SMG provides weather support to the US Human Spaceflight effort by:
- Providing weather forecasts and briefings to NASA
- Providing pre- and post-spaceflight weather analyses and documentation
- Advising Johnson Space Center of adverse weather
- Serving as meteorological consultants to JSC for current and future spaceflight endeavors
- Developing tools/techniques to enhance SMG's weather support.
- Climate Diagnostics Center: CDC develops national capabilities to analyze, interpret, and forecast important climate variations on time scales ranging from a few weeks to centuries.
- Hydrologic Research Laboratory: The Office of Hydrologic Development (OHD) enhances NWS products by: infusing new hydrologic science, developing hydrologic techniques for operational use; managing hydrologic development by NWS field offices; and, providing advanced hydrologic products to meet needs identified by NWS customers
- Hydrologic Information Center: HIC provides national real time hydrologic and river information.
- National Operational Hydrologic Center: NOHRSC provides remotely-sensed and modeled hydrology products for the coterminous U.S. and Alaska for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy.
- Alaska Aviation Weather Unit: AAWU provides aviation weather information for State of Alaska.
National Climatic Data Center
National Climatic Data Center NCDC develops both national and global data sets used by both government and private sector to maximize the resource provided by our climate and minimize the risks of climate variability and weather extremes. NCDC climate data have been used in a variety of applications including agriculture, air quality, construction, education, energy, engineering, forestry, health, insurance, landscape design, livestock management, manufacturing, recreation and tourism, retailing, transportation, and water resources management among other areas.
Regional Climate Centers
Tsunami Information
Buoy Information
National Data Buoy Center NDBC designs, develops, operates, and maintains a network of data collecting buoys and coastal stations.
StormReady and TsunamiReady Programs
Storm/TsunamiReady helps arm communities with the communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property, and helps community leaders and emergency managers strengthen local safety programs. Storm/TsunamiReady communities are better prepared to save lives through better planning, education, and awareness.
Training: The NOAA NWS Training Center provides training to federal employees in the areas of management, meteorology, hydrology, equipment maintenance, systems support, and related activities. The NWSTC Leadership Academy offers leadership training to all federal agencies. Training Center staff develop and deliver courses in a number of formats including residence classes and workshops, web-based and computer-based self-study tutorials, teletraining, and work aides.
