METAR/TAF Conversions
An updated series of charts and tables, in WordPerfect 6.1 and 5.1 format,
detailing the differences between the Surface Aviation Observation (SAO)
format and the METAR format, are available for FTP DOWNLOAD ONLY
.
The files are in WordPerfect rather than HTML format for a number of
reasons. These METAR technical documents are not intended for the casual
browser but rather are intended to be used by persons to download for later
study and use. WordPerfect is the standard word processing software used
by the NWS. The METAR technical documents contain special emphasis characters
and extensive use of tables that enhance the usefulness of the document.
These features may be lost in any translation to HTML. These documents
lend themselves much better to being maintained in WordPerfect format and
will not be converted to HTML. We apologize for any inconvenience this
may cause. Where we can utilize HTML-formatted files on this page we will,
and where we find the WordPerfect format to be more suitable we will use
that. Thank you for your understanding and continued interest in the page.
