PCU 1: Coordinate and Communicate with Aviation System Operational Partners
Description of Job Duty Competency to be Achieved:
A NWS meteorologist must be able to identify NWS aviation operational partners (e.g., FAA Air Traffic Controllers (ARTCC, Tower, TRACON, ATCSCC), airline and aviation industry dispatch and flight planners, DOD, NASA, Lockheed Martin Flight Services, and private weather vendors supporting airline/FAA) and establish a positive relationship with them. He must be able to explain how the National Airspace System (NAS) works including the operations, responsibilities, and needs of our aviation operational partners. He must be able to apply the principles of aviation decision support services (DSS) to maximize the safety and efficiency of the NAS and explain the potential impacts of his products and services on our partners' operations. He must coordinate with his peers (i.e., other NWS aviation meteorologists) to provide clear and consistent aviation products and services. He should be able to provide weather training to our aviation operational partners. He must be able to teach partners how to use NWS products and services to maximize the safety and efficiency of the National Airspace System (NAS). He should routinely obtain feedback from our aviation operational partners on his performance.
Description of Need:
In order to ensure the most efficient and effective air traffic flow across the NAS, the NWS aviation meteorologist must communicate aviation information and services clearly and concisely to all parties in the aviation community. To promote a unified message to our aviation partners, NWS aviation information and services must be consistent with other NWS information and services.- Core Instructional Components
