PCU 4: Perform Outreach to the Aviation Community
Description of Job Duty Competency to be Achieved:
A NWS meteorologist must be able to identify customers of NWS aviation products and services and establish a positive relationship with them. He must be able to explain how NWS aviation customers operate and what their needs are. He should identify aviation weather outreach opportunities, barriers to outreach, and effective means for overcoming these barriers. He must be able to provide outreach to aviation weather customers and encourage them to use NWS products and services. He should be able to provide weather training to our aviation customers. He must be able to teach customers how to use NWS products and services to maximize the safety and efficiency of flight. He should be able to teach pilots how to obtain the weather portion of a standard, pre-flight weather briefing using the NWS/AWC Aviation Digital Data Service (ADDS). A NWS meteorologist should routinely obtain feedback from our aviation weather customers.
Description of Need:
Even the most reliable and accurate NWS information and serives have no impact on the aviation community if they are not communicated in a manner that is understandable, meaningful, and actionable. Aviation customers and users must know how to best access and utilize evolving NWS information and services. Training of, and outreach to, our NWS customers will ensure aviation safety and allow for critical and informed operational aviation decision making.- Core Instructional Components

- Ability 1: Identify customers of NWS aviation products and services (e.g., Pilots, FAA Safety Team (FAAST) Counselors, local Fixed Based Operations (FBO), local airport officials, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapters, Civil Air Patrol, etc.).
- Skill 1.1: Data mine using the NWS Outreach & Education Event System (NOEES), state DOT aviation division, EAA, AOPA, FAA, etc.
- Ability 2: Establish and maintain a positive relationship with NWS aviation customers.
