PDS Statement of Responsibility: Issue fire weather forecasts and provide fire weather services.

See below for descriptions of the job competencies associated with each of the four Professional Competency Units (PCU). Specific instructional components for each PCU, with associated abilities and job skills, are in development and will be made available on this page when ready.


PCU 1: Develop and Maintain Customer Awareness and Partnerships

Producer - Vacant

Recognition of customers needs and partnership opportunities is critical to building strong relationships with land management agencies. Meteorologists need to understand how NWS products and services, as well as actual weather, impact the decision making process of land management agencies and personnel.


PCU 2: Assess the Fire Environment

Producer - Bob Nester (WR/WFO Missoula, MT)

Monitor and analyze the fire environment to anticipate and identify critical fire weather patterns, fuels, and topography.


PCU 3: Make the Warning Decision

Producer - Dan Borsum (WR/WFO Billings, MT)

Maintain knowledge of all relevant policies, integrate all relevant information and apply situational awareness to make appropriate warning decisions.


PCU 4: Provide Fire Weather Products and Services

Producer - Brent Wachter (SR/WFO Albuquerque, NM)

Understand the needs of our fire weather customers to ensure we produce timely, high quality, relevant, and clearly defined products and services using pertinent meteorological data, and fire weather forecast tools and techniques.
