...AUGUST 2014 WAS GENERALLY WARM WITH BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION
ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA...

.SUMMARY...
A BROAD TROUGH OVER THE EASTERN UNITED STATES PROMOTED WARM WESTERLY
FLOW ACROSS THE AREA DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE MONTH. RAINFALL
DURING THIS PERIOD WAS DRIVEN BY TYPICAL SEA BREEZE BOUNDARY
INTERACTIONS THAT FAVORED THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE FLORIDA PENINSULA
WITH DAILY AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS. BY THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH THE
SURFACE RIDGE AXIS MOVED NORTH AND SETTLED DIRECTLY OVERHEAD CENTRAL
FLORIDA....LEADING TO SEVERAL DAYS OF HOT AND DRY WEATHER ACROSS THE
AREA. BY THE END OF THE MONTH...AN ANOMALOUSLY DRY PATTERN OF STRONG
NORTHEAST FLOW ESTABLISHED ITSELF OVER THE AREA THANKS TO THE
INTERACTION BETWEEN TROPICAL STORM CRISTOBAL AND HIGH PRESSURE OVER
THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES.

.TEMPERATURES...
MOST LOCATIONS IN EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA EXPERIENCED ABOVE NORMAL
TEMPERATURES DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST. WARM WESTERLY FLOW THANKS
TO A SUPPRESSED SURFACE RIDGE ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA ALLOWED FOR ABOVE
NORMAL TEMPERATURES DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE MONTH. THE SURFACE
RIDGE AXIS EVENTUALLY MOVED NORTH AND STALLED OVER CENTRAL
FLORIDA...PROMOTING SEVERAL DAYS OF HOT AND DRY WEATHER FROM AUGUST
19TH TO THE 23RD. SHORTLY THEREAFTER...STRONG NORTHEAST FLOW OFF THE
WARM ATLANTIC WATERS PROMOTED ABOVE AVERAGE NIGHTTIME
LOWS...ESPECIALLY ALONG THE EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA COAST.

DAILY RECORD TEMPERATURES FOR THE MONTH:

DAYTONA BEACH:
- AUGUST 01: TIED RECORD WARM LOW OF 77 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD
WAS ALSO 77 DEGREES LAST SET IN 1999.
- AUGUST 09: TIED RECORD HIGH OF 95 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS
ALSO 95 DEGREES LAST SET IN 2007.
- AUGUST 23: RECORD HIGH OF 97 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 96
DEGREES LAST SET IN 1988.
- AUGUST 25: RECORD WARM LOW OF 79 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS
78 DEGREES LAST SET IN 2005.

MELBOURNE:
- AUGUST 03: RECORD WARM LOW OF 80 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS
78 DEGREES LAST SET IN 1984.
- AUGUST 24: TIED RECORD HIGH OF 95 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS
ALSO 95 DEGREES LAST SET IN 1960.
- AUGUST 25: TIED RECORD WARM LOW OF 80 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD
WAS ALSO 80 DEGREES LAST SET IN 1954.
- AUGUST 26: RECORD WARM LOW OF 80 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS
79 DEGREES LAST SET IN 1976.

AVERAGE TEMPERATURE VALUES FOR AUGUST 2014 AT THE FOUR PRIMARY
CLIMATE SITES ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE AS FOLLOWS (RANKING
PROVIDED IF IN THE TOP 10):

- DAYTONA BEACH HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 82.9 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.4 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS IS THE 5TH
WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

- ORLANDO HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 83.8 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.0 DEGREE ABOVE NORMAL. THIS TIES WITH 2011,
1963, AND 1951 AS THE 8TH WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

- MELBOURNE HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 83.6 DEGREES,
WHICH WAS 1.8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS IS THE 5TH WARMEST AUGUST
ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

- VERO BEACH HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 81.5 DEGREES,
WHICH IS 0.2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.

.RAINFALL....
TYPICAL SUMMERTIME THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED EACH AFTERNOON DURING THE
FIRST TWO WEEKS OF AUGUST AND GENERALLY FAVORED EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA
DUE TO WESTERLY FLOW. THE RIDGE AXIS THAT HAD REMAINED SOUTH OF THE
AREA MOST OF THE SUMMER MIGRATED NORTH TOWARDS OUR AREA AND GREATLY
SUPPRESSED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY DURING THE MIDDLE OF AUGUST. SOON
AFTER...ANOMALOUSLY STRONG NORTHEAST WINDS KEPT PRECIPITATION TO A
MINIMUM ACROSS THE AREA SAVE FOR LIGHT ONSHORE MOVING SHOWERS. MOST
LOCATIONS REPORTED NEAR TO BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL IN AUGUST. OF
NOTE...DAYTONA BEACH RECEIVED ONLY 2.24 INCHES OF RAINFALL DURING
THE MONTH...MAKING THIS THE 2ND DRIEST AUGUST ON RECORD.

AUGUST 2014 RAINFALL TOTALS FOR THE FOUR PRIMARY CLIMATE SITES
ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE AS FOLLOWS (RANKING PROVIDED IF IN
THE TOP 10):

- DAYTONA BEACH RECEIVED 2.24 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH
WAS 4.16 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS WAS THE 2ND DRIEST AUGUST ON
RECORD FOR DAYTONA BEACH.

- ORLANDO RECEIVED 7.01 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH WAS 0.12
INCHES BELOW NORMAL.

- MELBOURNE RECEIVED 4.35 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH WAS
3.33 INCHES BELOW NORMAL.

- VERO BEACH RECEIVED 6.29 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH WAS
0.74 INCHES BELOW NORMAL.
