PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE KEY WEST FL
800 AM EDT THU MAY 21 2015

...NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK MAY 16-22...

...TODAY`S TOPIC...THUNDERSTORM SAFETY...

THE FOLLOWING IS A SAFE BOATING MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL SAFE
BOATING COUNCIL AND THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE.

TO MARINERS...THUNDERSTORMS CAN BE THEIR WORST NIGHTMARE.
THUNDERSTORMS CAN DEVELOP QUICKLY...AND CREATE DANGEROUS WIND AND
WAVE CONDITIONS. THUNDERSTORMS CAN BRING SHIFTING AND GUSTY WINDS...
LIGHTNING...WATERSPOUTS...AND TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS WHICH CAN TURN A
PLEASURABLE DAY INTO A NIGHTMARE OF DISTRESS.

NO SPECIFIC WARNINGS OR ADVISORIES EXIST FOR LIGHTNING. HOWEVER...
ALL THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCE LIGHTNING. A LIGHTNING STRIKE TO A VESSEL
CAN BE CATASTROPHIC...ESPECIALLY IF IT RESULTS IN A FIRE OR LOSS OF
ELECTRONICS. IF YOUR BOAT HAS A CABIN...THEN STAY INSIDE AND AVOID
TOUCHING METAL OR ELECTRICAL DEVICES. IF YOUR BOAT DOES NOT HAVE A
CABIN...THEN STAY AS LOW AS YOU CAN IN THE BOAT.

REMEMBER...STAY LOW OR GO BELOW!

BOATERS SHOULD USE EXTRA CAUTION WHEN THUNDERSTORM CONDITIONS
EXIST...AND HAVE A PLAN OF ESCAPE. MARINERS ARE ESPECIALLY
VULNERABLE BECAUSE...AT TIMES...THEY MAY BE UNABLE TO REACH PORT
QUICKLY. THEREFORE...WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT VENTURE
OUT IF THUNDERSTORMS ARE A POSSIBILITY. IF YOU DO VENTURE OUT... AND
RECOGNIZE THUNDERSTORMS NEARBY...HEAD TO PORT OR SAFE SHELTER AS
QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. ULTIMATELY...BOATING SAFETY BEGINS ASHORE WITH
PLANNING AND TRAINING. KEEP IN MIND THAT THUNDERSTORMS USUALLY ARE
BRIEF...SO WAITING THEM OUT IS BETTER THAN RIDING THEM OUT.

THIS MESSAGE WAS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND
THE NATIONAL SAFE BOATING COUNCIL. VISIT THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE ON THE WEB AT WWW.WEATHER.GOV AND THE NATIONAL SAFE BOATING

...NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK...

THE FOLLOWING IS A SAFE BOATING MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL SAFE
BOATING COUNCIL AND THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE...REMINDING YOU
THAT THIS IS NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK...MAY 16TH THROUGH MAY 22ND.

TODAY`S TOPIC...THUNDERSTORM SAFETY

THUNDERSTORMS CAN BE A MARINERS WORST NIGHTMARE. THEY CAN DEVELOP
QUICKLY AND CREATE DANGEROUS WIND AND WAVE CONDITIONS. THUNDERSTORMS
CAN BRING SHIFTING AND GUSTY WINDS, LIGHTNING, WATERSPOUTS, AND
TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS WHICH CAN TURN A DAYS PLEASURE INTO A NIGHTMARE
OF DISTRESS. THERE ARE NO SPECIFIC WARNINGS OR ADVISORIES FOR
LIGHTNING BUT ALL THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCE LIGHTNING. A LIGHTNING
STRIKE TO A VESSEL CAN BE CATASTROPHIC, ESPECIALLY IF IT RESULTS IN
A FIRE OR LOSS OF ELECTRONICS. IF YOUR BOAT HAS A CABIN, THEN STAY
INSIDE AND AVOID TOUCHING METAL OR ELECTRICAL DEVICES. IF YOUR BOAT
DOES NOT HAVE A CABIN, STAY AS LOW AS YOU CAN IN THE BOAT. BOATERS
SHOULD USE EXTRA CAUTION WHEN THUNDERSTORM CONDITIONS EXIST AND HAVE
A PLAN OF ESCAPE. MARINERS ARE ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE AS AT TIMES
THEY MAY UNABLE TO REACH PORT QUICKLY. IT IS THEREFORE STRONGLY
RECOMMENDED YOU DO NOT VENTURE OUT IF THUNDERSTORMS ARE A
POSSIBILITY. IF YOU DO VENTURE OUT AND RECOGNIZE THUNDER STORMS
NEARBY, HEAD TO PORT OR SAFE SHELTER AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
ULTIMATELY, BOATING SAFETY BEGINS ASHORE WITH PLANNING AND TRAINING.
KEEP IN MIND THAT THUNDERSTORMS ARE USUALLY BRIEF SO WAITING IT OUT
IS BETTER THAN RIDING IT OUT.

...NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK...

THE FOLLOWING IS A SAFE BOATING MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL SAFE
BOATING COUNCIL AND THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE...REMINDING YOU
THAT THIS IS NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK...MAY 16TH THROUGH MAY 22ND.

TODAY`S TOPIC...FIRE EXTINGUISHERS.

U.S. COAST GUARD APPROVED...MARINE-TYPE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ARE
REQUIRED ON BOATS WHERE A FIRE HAZARD COULD BE EXPECTED FROM THE
ENGINES ON A FUEL SYSTEM.

WHEN REQUIRED...BOATS LESS THAN 26 FEET MUST CARRY AT LEAST ONE B-
1...COAST GUARD APPROVED FIRE EXTINGUISHER. BOATS 26-40 FEET MUST
CARRY TWO B-1 OR ONE B-2 COAST GUARD APPROVED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS.
BOATS 45-60 FEET IN LENGTH MUST CARRY THREE B-1 OR TWO B-2 AND ONE B-
1 COAST GUARD APPROVED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ARE CLASSIFIED BY A LETTER AND A NUMBER SYMBOL.
THE LETTER INDICATES THE TYPE OF FIRE THE UNIT IS DESIGNED TO
EXTINGUISH AND THE NUMBER INDICATES THE SIZE OF THE EXTINGUISHER. A
TYPE B EXTINGUISHER...FOR EXAMPLE...IS INTENDED TO EXTINGUISH
BURNING LIQUIDS SUCH AS GASOLINE...OIL OR GREASE...ALL COMMON ON A
BOAT.

THE BOATER SHOULD NOT HAVE TO TRAVEL MORE THAN HALF THE LENGTH OF
THEIR BOAT TO GET TO THEIR FIRE EXTINGUISHER. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
SHOULD BE INSPECTED ANNUALLY BY THE BOATER TO ENSURE THEY ARE
PROPERLY CHARGED...STORED...AND ARE UNDAMAGED.

THIS MESSAGE WAS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND
THE NATIONAL SAFE BOATING COUNCIL. VISIT THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE ON THE WEB AT WWW.WEATHER.GOV AND THE NATIONAL SAFE BOATING
