PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FAIRBANKS AK
1026 AM AKST MON MAR 2 2015

...MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY FOR FEBRUARY 2015 FOR FAIRBANKS
ALASKA...

MUCH LIKE JANUARY 2015...FEBRUARY 2015 WAS A MONTH OF CONTRASTS
WITH PERIODS OF MUCH BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND PERIODS OF MUCH
ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH
HOWEVER WAS JUST ABOVE NORMAL AS THERE WERE MORE DAYS WITH ABOVE
NORMAL TEMPERATURES AS COMPARED TO THE NUMBER OF DAYS WITH BELOW
NORMAL TEMPERATURES. THERE WERE NO DAILY TEMPERATURE OR PRECIPITATION
RECORDS SET IN FEBRUARY 2015 AT THE FAIRBANKS AIRPORT

THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 11.6 DEGREES WHICH WAS 1.6
DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 10.0
DEGREES ABOVE. THIS RANKED AS THE 50TH WARMEST OF 107 YEARS OF
RECORD. THE AVERAGE LOW TEMPERATURE WAS 9.6 BELOW WHICH WAS 3.1
DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL AVERAGE LOW TEMPERATURE OF 12.7 DEGREES
BELOW. THIS RANKED AS THE 43RD WARMEST OF 108 YEARS OF RECORD. THE
MEAN TEMPERATURE WAS 1.0 DEGREES ABOVE WHICH WAS 2.3 DEGREES ABOVE
THE NORMAL MEAN TEMPERATURE OF 1.3 DEGREES BELOW. THIS RANKED AS
THE 46TH WARMEST OF 107 YEARS OF RECORD.

FEBRUARY 2015 STARTED OFF WITH A COLD SNAP THAT CONTINUED THROUGH
THE 10TH. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE 43 BELOW WHICH OCCURRED ON THE
7TH. THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED TO 43 BELOW ON THE 26TH AND 27TH OF
JANUARY AS WELL AND REMAINS THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE RECORDED AT
THE FAIRBANKS AIRPORT FOR THE 2014 TO 2015 COLD SEASON. SO FAR
THERE HAVE BEEN SEVEN 40 BELOW OR COLDER DAYS RECORDED THIS COLD
SEASON AT THE AIRPORT. THERE ARE ON AVERAGE 11 DAYS PER COLD
SEASON THAT THE TEMPERATURE DROPS TO 40 BELOW OR COLDER AT THE
FAIRBANKS AIRPORT. THE TEMPERATURE WARMED DRAMATICALLY AFTER THE
10TH OF THE MONTH WITH ONLY 2 DAYS AT OR BELOW NORMAL FOR THE REST
OF THE MONTH. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 37 WHICH OCCURRED ON THE
16TH.

A SIGNIFICANT ICE STORM...ONE TENTH OF AN INCH OF ICE OR MORE...
BEGAN IN FAIRBANKS ON THE 21ST AND CONTINUED ON THE 22ND. 0.23
INCHES OF RAIN FELL AT THE AIRPORT WHICH FROZE ON THE GROUND AND
ROADS CREATING HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS. MANY LOCATIONS FROM
FAIRBANKS AND EAST RECORDED BETWEEN ONE QUARTER AND ONE THIRD OF
AN INCH OF ICE ON THE GROUND AND TRAVELING SURFACES. MANY CHURCH
SERVICES WERE CANCELLED ON SUNDAY AND LOCAL SCHOOLS WERE CANCELLED
ON MONDAY THE 23RD. THIS MADE THE 4TH OF THE LAST 5 WINTERS WITH A
SIGNIFICANT ICE EVENT IN THE FAIRBANKS AREA. FOR THE MONTH 0.48
INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL AT THE FAIRBANKS AIRPORT WHICH RANKED
AS THE 36TH WETTEST OF 104 YEARS OF RECORD. DESPITE BEING A
RELATIVELY WET MONTH ONLY 4.0 INCHES OF SNOW FELL AT THE AIRPORT
WHICH WAS 4.1 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL FEBRUARY SNOW FALL OF 8.1
INCHES. THIS RANKED AS THE 71ST SNOWIEST OF 104 YEARS OF RECORD.
SEASON TO DATE SNOW FALL THROUGH THE 28TH OF FEBRUARY WAS ONLY
33.6 INCHES WHICH WAS 22.7 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL SEASON TO DATE
SNOW FALL OF 56.3 INCHES.

THE HEAVIEST 24 HOUR SNOW FALL THAT FELL IN FEBRUARY WAS 2.6
INCHES WHICH FELL ON THE 28TH JUST AHEAD OF A POWERFUL FRONT THAT
PUSHED THROUGH THE AREA ON THE EVENING OF THE 28TH WITH 50 MPH
WIND GUSTS AT THE FAIRBANKS AIRPORT. STRONG WINDS COMBINED WITH
PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOW CAUSED SIGNIFICANT BLOWING AND DRIFTING
SNOW THROUGHOUT THE FAIRBANKS AREA. HIGHWAYS OVER LOCAL SUMMITS
WERE CLOSED DUE TO BLIZZARD CONDITIONS.

LOOKING FORWARD TO MARCH...TEMPERATURES CLIMB SHARPLY AS THE SUN
ANGLE AND LENGTH OF DAY LIGHT INCREASES. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH
TEMPERATURE INCREASES FROM 18 DEGREES ON THE 1ST TO 34 DEGREES ON
THE 31ST. THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE INCREASE FROM 9 BELOW
ON THE 1ST TO 8 ABOVE ON THE 31ST. OVER THE PAST 110 YEARS
TEMPERATURES HAVE RANGED FROM 56 ABOVE IN 1994 TO 56 BELOW IN
1911. MARCH IS ON AVERAGE THE DRIEST MONTH IN FAIRBANKS. NORMAL
PRECIPITATION IS 0.25 INCHES WHILE NORMAL SNOW FALL IS 4.9 INCHES.
IN SOME YEARS THE NOW PACK BEGINS TO MELT DURING THE LAST WEEK OF
MARCH IN URBAN AREAS...THOUGH TYPICALLY THE SNOW PACK BEGINS TO
MELT IN APRIL.

POSSIBLE SUNSHINE INCREASES BY NEARLY 7 MINUTES PER DAY DURING
MARCH AND INCREASES FROM 10 HOURS AND 7 MINUTES ON THE 1ST TO 13
HOURS AND 29 MINUTES ON THE 31ST.

THE FORECAST FOR MARCH FROM THE CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER CALLS
FOR INCREASED CHANCES FOR ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND INCREASED
CHANCES FOR ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION.
