PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAS VEGAS NV
355 PM PST THU FEB 4 2016 /455 PM MST THU FEB 4 2016/

...JANUARY SUMMARY...

JANUARY BEGAN WITH SOME OF THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES SEEN IN A WHILE.
THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH OCCURRED ON THE MORNING OF THE
1ST WHEN THE LOW AT MCCARRAN DROPPED TO 27 DEGREES. THIS WAS THE
COLDEST READING SINCE JANUARY 15, 2013 WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED
TO 23 DEGREES. THE FIRST STORM SYSTEM OF THE YEAR MOVED INTO THE
REGION ON JANUARY 4-8 AND PRODUCED WIDESPREAD RAIN AND SNOW ACROSS
THE REGION. MOST OF THE VALLEY LOCATIONS RECEIVED BETWEEN A QUARTER
AND HALF OF INCH OF RAINFALL WHILE THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS SAW 1-2
FEET OF NEW SNOW. MT CHARLESTON RECEIVED 12 INCHES OF NEW SNOW ON
JANUARY 6 WHICH WAS THE MOST SNOW IN 24 HOURS SINCE 18 INCHES FELL
ON JANUARY 22, 2010.

QUIET WEATHER THEN PREVAILED BETWEEN THE 9TH AND THE 18TH BEFORE A
WEAK SYSTEM ON THE 19TH BROUGHT SOME ADDITIONAL RAIN AND SNOW TO THE
AREA WITH RAINFALL TOTALS GENERALLY LESS THAN A QUARTER OF AN INCH
WITH A FEW INCHES OF SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS.

ANOTHER TRANQUIL PERIOD OCCURRED BETWEEN THE 20TH AND THE 29TH BEFORE
A STRONG STORM SYSTEM MOVED INTO THE REGION. WINDS INCREASED ACROSS
THE AREA ON THE 30TH AND BROUGHT RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES TO SEVERAL
LOCATIONS INCLUDING LAS VEGAS WHICH RECORDED 74 DEGREES. BETWEEN THE
31ST AND 1ST OF FEBRUARY WIDESPREAD RAIN AND SNOW OCCURRED ACROSS
NORTHERN INYO...ESMERALDA...CENTRAL NYE AND LINCOLN COUNTIES. MANY
LOCATIONS HAD BETWEEN 8-14 INCHES OF SNOW AND THE MOST SNOW IN A 24
HOUR PERIOD IN A FEW YEARS. SEVERAL SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ALSO
DEVELOPED ACROSS PORTIONS OF SAN BERNARDINO AND CLARK COUNTIES WHERE
WIND GUSTS PRODUCED SOME MINOR DAMAGE AND A LIGHTNING STRIKE CAUSED
A HOUSE FIRE IN NORTHWEST LAS VEGAS. THUNDER WAS RECORDED AT
MCCARRAN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN JANUARY SINCE 1979 AND ONLY THE THIRD
TIME EVER.

TIME EVER.
